The guys who knows it all says that desserts are unreasonably expensive because:
- people crave for sweeties after main course and are willing to pay a premium to be satisfied,
- the smaller the amount of food (of anything) you buy the more you pay per unit (gram or litre or something),
- desserts are considered small works of art more than any other course and therefore command a premium,
- once people have started spending money (starter, main course) they get on a roll,
- the less functional and the more enticing a particular type of food is, the more the human psychology is willing to accept the penalty of extra cost,
- people's gauge of a restaurant's price level is determined mostly by the price of the main course, which is something the restaurant owners blatantly abuse,
- people are greedy and stupid.
I will receive my PhD next Friday. You are invited to the occasion at the Faculty of Social and Other Useless Siences. Desserts will be served.
